Theclubopenedon30October1959inabasementat39GerrardStreetinLondon'sSohodistrict.ItwasmanagedbymusiciansRonnieScottandPeteKing.In1965itmovedtoalargervenuenearbyat47FrithStreet.Theoriginalvenuecontinuedinoperationasthe"OldPlace"untiltheleaseranoutin1967,andwasusedforperformancesbytheupandcominggenerationofmusicians. ZootSimswastheclub'sfirsttransatlanticvisitorin1962,andwassucceededbymanyothers(oftensaxophonistswhomScottandKing,tenorsaxophoniststhemselves,admired,suchasJohnnyGriffin,LeeKonitz,SonnyRollins,SonnyStitt)intheyearsthatfollowed.ManyUKjazzmusicianswerealsoregularlyfeatured,includingTubbyHayesandDickMorrisseywhowouldbothdropinforjamsessionswiththevisitingstars.Inthemid1960s,ErnestRanglinwasthehouseguitarist.Theclub'shousepianistuntil1967wasStanTracey.Fornearly30yearsitwashomeofaChristmasresidencytoGeorgeMellyandJohnChilton'sFeetwarmers.Inearly1969,TheWhopremieredPeteTownshend'srockopera"Tommy"attheclub.ItwasthesiteofJimiHendrix'slastliveperformance. Scottregularlyactedastheclub'sMasterofCeremonies,andwas(in)famousforhisrepertoireofjokes,asidesandoneliners.AfterScott'sdeath,Kingcontinuedtoruntheclubforafurthernineyears,beforesellingtheclubtotheatreimpresarioSallyGreeneinJune2005. In2009RonnieScott'swasnamedbytheBreconJazzFestivalasoneof12venueswhichhadmadethemostimportantcontributionstojazzmusicintheUnitedKingdom,[1]andfinishedthirdinthevotingfortheinitialaward.
