Awishtoplayinstrumentalhiphopinabandcontextbroughtthegrouptogether,withTackettalongsidedrummerJoshWalletCohen,reedplayerGeoffDoubleGGallegos,trumpetersToddSimonandPaulVargas,tromboneplayerDanOsterman,keyboardplayerCarlosGuaico,percussionistDavyChegwidden,guitaristDanUbick,andvocalistsSolSistaDeMyaandMixmasterWolf(akaStonesThrowhonchoPeanutButterWolf).Theirclubnight,RootDown,broughtincrowds,alongwiththecreamoftherapunderground(Jurassic5,DilatedPeoples,CompanyFlow,DJShadow,FreestyleFellowship),andtheirfirstsingle,GetchoSoulTogetha,appearedonStonesThrowin1999. ThatyearalsobroughtanintriguingdemocalledTheLiveMixTape—includingBreakestracoversofahostofdeepfunkclassics—butanofficialrelease(asTheLiveMix,Pt.1)waiteduntil2001andonlyappearedinJapan.Thesecondvolumefollowedlaterthatyear,andwasreleasedonStonesThrow.In2005Breakestrarecordedasingle,FamilyRap,featuringChali2naandSoupfromJurassic5andDoubleKfromPeopleUndertheStairs,andalsoreleasedtheirthirdstudioalbum,HittheFloor,onUbiquityRecords,withanearlyentirelydifferentlineup.
